Daily Log: 10/8

Am Lit: Today students identified passages of importance in chapters 9-10 and explained the passages' significances to their peers. Read chapter 11-13 over the weekend.

MoC: We completed a vocabulary quiz and continued to build on introductions and thesis statements. Finish thesis statement examples for Monday.

English 1: We completed a verb phrase quiz, compared Walter Mitty to Snoopy, and read There Will Come Soft Rains. Review verb phrases this weekend for the quiz retake. Chapter 12 in the yellow book will help you.

Boys: We completed a verb phrase quiz and began discussion on Walter Mitty. Study for the verb phrase quiz retake. We will finish Walter Mitty on Monday.

MoC: Today vocabulary lists were for week 4 were given and lab time for personal narratives was provided.

Am Lit: Today we wrapped up Huck Finn. Monday will be primarily a review of major realizations and connections to Huck Finn. Test Tuesday.

Daily Log: 9/23/10

Am Lit: We read through the climax of the novel - Huck's moral decision to save Jim. Examine the three chapters for important passages especially those in which Huck seems to be commenting on society. I will summarize the last section of reading - Tom and Huck's plan to free Jim. Read it tonight if you don't want to only receive the summary. A test will be given on Tuesday.

MoC: We read a student example of a narrative and began developing narrative topics and outlines. Tomorrow lab time is provided after the vocabulary quiz. PLEASE REVIEW YOUR WORDS!

English 1: Received notes on setting and conflict. Read Wine on the Desert - a short story in 21 Short Stories. We will be examining it for setting and plot.

Am Lit: Today we discussed the remainder of the Wilkes Ruse by way of a full class discussion. Tomorrow the reading is Chapter 31-33. If you want to continue reading, please feel free to read further.

MoC: The students completed a pronoun/antecedent quiz. After the quiz was complete, students read Annie Dillard's The Chase to look at a professional narrative.

English 1: Students took the parts of speech quiz. After the quiz students took notes on the Short Story Elements. If you were absent, please get the notes from a classmate.

Boys: The students used the lab after they were finished with their parts of speech quiz.

Am Lit: Read chapters 22-23 for Monday. Today we discussed the Duke and the Dauphin's entrance.

MoC: Papers should be submitted by 11:59 PM to Google Docs. Students completed a vocabulary quiz for week two and learned about pronoun and antecedent agreement. A practice worksheet was assigned to be completed over the weekend.

English 1: Home to El Building was finished and students discussed the reading using the Relevant Reads passages that they located from the text. White Balloons was assigned for reading over the weekend.

Boys: Completion of assignments is imperative to academic success. Read White Balloons for Monday.

Am Lit: Today we went through chapter 16 of Huck Finn using a small group discussion format. Chapters 17-18 will be discussed tomorrow in class. There will be a lot to cover. A new blog post has been assigned - complete by Monday.

MoC: Today we completed a vocabulary review. Students used each word in a sentence or drew a small picture that identifies the word. No homework. Remember that description essays are due Friday. Lab day tomorrow.

English 1 (Period 3): Read Don Jose of La Mancha and complete the assigned questions.

English 1 (Period 11): No homework. Acting out Matoa's Mirror took us up to the bell.

Am Lit: Today we discussed chapters 12-15. Chapter 16 will be discussed tomorrow. Chapters 17-18 are to be read for tomorrow.

MoC: Today students set up Google.com accounts for Google Docs. The remainder of the time period was for writing. Review vocabulary words for Friday!

English 1: The adjective worksheet was returned to students. In small groups of four students discussed, using their note cards, the short story, The One Who Watches. For tomorrow read Matoa's Mirror.

Boys: In groups of 4-5 students decided how they would act out the second half of Matoa's Mirror. Students will act out their scene tomorrow. For the remainder of class - starting at noon - we watch President Obama's address to students.

Am Lit: Students completed reading comprehension questions for chapters 9-11. For tomorrow, students should read chapters 12-16. Huck and Jim's adventure down the Mississippi River begins!

MoC: Students received new vocabulary words for week two. Remember the lists are accessible through the wiki link on the left side of this page. Began to go over parts of speech and inserting specific adjectives into sentences. Tomorrow is a work day in the lab. Remember Wednesday, Sept. 15th is your rough draft date to submit your writing.

English 1: Assigned Adjective Wksht and "The One Who Watches" for homework. This during-reading reading strategy requires students to record on a notecard: one question, one passage, and three other notes (comments, character or plot development, conflict, or connections).

Boys: We read the first essay from the Guys Read collection of essays. We went over the adjective worksheet and assigned "Matoa's Mirror" for tomorrow. Complete the during-reading strategy of active reading notes.

Am Lit: Today we finished our discussion on chapters 5-7 and students turned in the worksheet with the completed questions. I then went through a PowerPoint lecture/discussion about chapter 8. Read 9-11 for Monday.

MoC: We completed a vocabulary quiz and edited/revised paragraphs for detail. The descriptive essay was assigned with a Friday, September 17th deadline. No immediate homework for Monday. Enjoy your weekend.

English 1: We went through a PowerPoint with discussion questions about the sthort story Beauty Lessons. Students then used the pre-reading strategy Probable Passage for the short story Catch the Moon. Read Catch the Moon for Monday.

Boys: We went through the short story Catch the Moon as a whole group. We then went over N/Pro/Adj. Students are expected to complete the ADJECTIVE wksht for Monday.

Am Lit: Discussed blog #1 (10 pts) as a whole class before completing a quiz on chapters 5-7 (6 pts). In small groups students completed discussion questions focused on comprehension, analysis, and interpretation. Students will have 5 minutes in the beginning of class to discuss their discussion responses- questions should be completed for tomorrow and chapter 8 should be read

MoC:  I assigned a Norman Rockwell picture for students to write a descriptive paragraph capturing the moment in words. Paragraph to be used tomorrow in class.

English 1: Discussed the double entry journal for Bad Influence. The journal was collected (10 pts). Students then participated in a reading strategy - Say Something - for the short story Beauty Lessons. The short story should be finished for tomorrow.

Of course, after telling all of your parents who attended Back To School Night that I would have a daily log of assignments recorded on the blog, I got caught up completing other school work during 10th period (my usual posting time) and forgot to return to the task. While I can't promise you that I will never miss a posting, I will strive to be as consistent as I can. Happy Thursday!

Am Lit: Today, in a large group discussion, we went over chapters 1-4 of Huck Finn. For Thursday, read chapters 5-7 and complete the blog assignment from Tuesday.

MoC: We worked using details in our writing. Students, in groups of 3-4, worked to come up with as many specific details about a setting as they could. No homework. Vocabulary quiz Friday!

English 1: Today we went over Bad Influence in class. The vocabulary in context should have been completed prior to class, and in small groups, the students completed the backside of the page. Once completed, the work was turned in. Homework: Read Arturo's Flight and complete the double entry journal.

Boys: An Island Like You and the vocabulary journal was introduced. We went over eight literary allusions that are present in the short story. Homework: Read Arturo's Flight and complete the double entry journal.

Daily Post: 9/7/10

Am Lit: Today students received Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. As a class we went over a Huck Finn introduction packet that provided the location of the novel, the images of Huck Finn, and information about the Mississippi River. Homework: Read Ch. I-IV (1-4). There may be a reading quiz covering the four chapters.

MoC: Vocabulary for week 1 has been provided and can be accessed from the wiki on the left of the page. Reviewed topic sentence formation using the topic sentence packet. I introduced supporting sentences and students revised weak paragraphs. Homework: Revise two of the weak paragraphs.

English 1: Nouns and Pronouns worksheet was corrected in class. The Vocabulary Journal (to be completed before the end of the novel) was presented. Remember to complete the journal using words that are on the fringe of your vocabulary or words that you have heard before but may be unsure of the definite meaning. An Island Like You was passed out. Homework: Read Bad Influence and complete the "Spanish in Context" side of the worksheet.

Boys: Nouns and Pronouns worksheet was corrected in class. Writing assessments were returned. The second half of class was provided for them to select a book for their 1st Quarter Book Projects. Tomorrow we will begin An Island Like You.

Daily Post: 9/3/10

Am Lit: Watched clips of Mark Twain documentary by Ken Burns to establish historical context for The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The film was paused at moments to stress important facts and influences on Twain's writing. Assignment: Documentary Facts, Opinions, and Comments (Turned in at the conclusion of class). If you were not present, please search the Internet for 10 facts, opinions, and comments that you find interesting. Bring the completed work to class on Tuesday.

Moc: We began working to understand organization in writing. After mapping out the organization of an essary: Introduction, Body, and Conclusion, we worked to understand the paragraph - the building block of a larger piece of writing. Using the Topic Sentence Packet, students completed the first four pages.

English 1: Today the Independent Book Project was introduced. Ten minutes was used to look through the library for a book. While that was probably not enough time for everyone to get a book, book titles were viewed to be considered. Nouns and Pronouns were discussed using a diagram on the white board. For homework, students should complete the Nouns and Pronouns worksheet for Tuesday.

Am Lit: Students read, analyzed, and interpreted Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants", which served as an introduction to analyzing and interpreting literature.

MoC: Students read a Sports Illustrated article that showed "good" writing. Students looked for examples of good writing within the article. We concluded with a discussion on good writing.

Pale light filtered through the clouds. The wind blew from the lake. The day was dreary and dizmal. The young man was a good mood. He was on his way to the bus station. He was headed to Florida. He wanted to spend a week in the sunshine. He had saved his money for the trip. He had looked forward to the journy for six months.

After a forty-five minute walk in the cold wind. The young man arrived at the bus stattion. He purchased his ticket. He bought a magazine to read. He sat on a bench. He waited for the announcement that the bus was ready for boarding. A lady who sat next to the yound man in the station was listening to a portable radio. When the man heard, "And now, the new," he listeded carefully for the weather report. The announcer gave this news: "The first hurricane of the season is heading toward Florida."

Daily Log: 3/12/10

English 1: Today we worked on a monologue activity. Students selected a monologue from a movie and inserted stage directions into the piece. The assignment is saved on the O: Drive. Be sure to have it completed for Monday. If anyone wants to perform his or her monologue, the floor is yours at the beginning of class on Monday.

MOC: Today we wrapped up "This I Believe" by uploading student podcasts and essays to the wiki. Way to go - the projects look great. Go to feickmechanics2.pbworks.com to view your peers "This I Believe" essays.

Am Lit: Completed the Huck Finn Test. Congratulations, you have finished one of America's finest novels!

Acc English 1:  Completed writing with different sentence types in class writing assessment. Drama notes - get notes from peer if you are absent. Remember to work on your essay for Tuesday; you will have a work day on Monday.

Daily Log: 3/8/10

English 1: We went over the sentence types worksheet. Assignment: Write a paragraph using at least 1 complex sentence and compound/complex sentence. We will have a quiz on Wednesday. We began taking notes on Drama. If you were absent, please get the notes from a classmate.


MoC: Vocabulary #6 was handed out. Access available from the wiki. "This I Believe" essay was worked on today in class. Tomorrow, your final essay is due uploaded to Google Docs at the end of class.

Am Lit: We made connections with passages from the four assigned chapters. Students then shared their passages with other groups. Read 35-37 for tomorrow.

Acc English: Dissected the three short stories assigned for class today. Then, we shared passages with other groups. Finish the book for tomorrow.

English 1: Today we covered sentence types - simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex. Complete both sides of the wksht handed out in class for Monday.

MoC: Vocabulary Quiz #5 and introduced sentence fluency by using clauses.

Am Lit: Read 31-34. Quiz chapter 24-30. In-class small group discussion with guided questions.

Acc English 1: Read "Good From ", "The Ghost Soldiers", and "Field Trip" for Monday. The book will be finished on Tuesday. Vocabulary due Wednesday!

Am Lit: Examined passages for Twain's deeper meaning. READ: Ch 24-27.

Acc English 1: Discussed how "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong" fits the definition of a true war story. Added to the theme tracker sheet. No reading due tomorrow. You can skip "Stockings" and "Church". They are good stories, but we won't be discussing them.  READING for Friday -  "Speaking of Courage," "Notes", and "In Good Form".

4. Search for essays by theme or age. If theme or age does not interest you, you can repeat step #2 and click on “featured essays” or “1950s essays”.
5. Locate and read TWO essays that you find interesting.

Am Lit: Reading Quiz Chapters 12-16. Each group of 4-5 was assigned a chapter. First, select two passages and record their significance. Second, create four questions pertaining to the chapter that requrie higher level thinking. We will discuss questions and passages tomorrow.

Am Lit: Paired exploration of Ch 9-11. We see Jim as a protector. Read Chapters 12-16 for tomorrow.

Am Lit: Discussed chapters 5-7 with the aid of discussion questions. Will go over them tomorrow at the beginning of class (Am Lit - 4th period). Read Chapter 8 for tomorrow.

English 1: Today we finished informative speeches. Hopefully, you all learned from your peers as they presented on unique and entertaining topics. A clause assignment was distributed - due Monday, 2/22/10.

MoC: We completed a vocabulary quiz - week 3. Complete Thesis and Introduction assignment for Monday, 2/22/10.

Am Lit: Discussed chapters 1-4. If absent, get notes from peers. Homework: Read Chapters 5-7.

Daily Log: 2/18/10

English 1: Informative Speeches - Tomorrow is the last day for speeches. If you have not went yet, please be prepared tomorrow.

MoC: We shared the vocabulary paragraphs that were created yesterday. Next, notes were written on the board about the basic format of an essay. Then, we focused solely on creating catchy introductions. Notes and examples were given.

Am Lit: Discussed reasons why people challenge books. Introduced The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. For tomorrow read chapters 1-4 (I-IV).

Acc English 1: Informative Speeches - From the looks of what we have left, we will be going through Tuesday next week.

Informative Speech Requirements

Your speech will be 4-6 minutes exploring a topic of your choice. Your topic will be from one of the following areas - a. person, b. place, c. event, d. mechanism, e. process, or f. organization. It will include an introduction, supporting facts, and a conclusion. Remember to apply the criticism that you received on your last speech to this one for improvement.

This speech also has a multi-media component. Utilize a poster board, PowerPoint, podcast, video to enhance your speech.

English 1: Finished brief introductory speeches. Personal narrative speeches introduced. Tomorrow we will be a speech writing day to develop, organize, transfer to note cards, and rehearse depending on which stage you are at. SPEECHES BEGIN MONDAY!!!

MoC: Finished categorizing example essays. Wrote an in-class essay, self-ranked writing, and conferenced with me. Write on one of the following topics:
  • A. Is the school dress code appropriate?
  • B. The internet is more beneficial than detrimental. OR The internet does more harm than good. 
Am Lit: Completed a discussion on "What is an American?" Began reading "What is Happening to America" by John Steinbeck. Please get a Google ID so you can comment on future blog posts.

English 1: We finished speech notes. If absent, please get notes from a peer. Students practiced characteristics of a strong speech by giving short introductory speeches.  We will finish the introductory speeches tomorrow in class.

MoC: Categorized seven sample essays. Decided what makes up a strong essay.

American Lit. : We viewed three short films that portray different perceptions of the American Dream.
